Michigan is the birthplace of Trout Unlimited. Trout, walleye, salmon, steelhead [A1,A2] and bass [A1,A2] abound. Michigan's many great rivers make for a unbelievable fly fishing experience and a short list includes:
- The Au Sable River is a dry-fly nirvana.
- The Manistee River sports a large number of browns, brookies and rainbows at the headwaters and good steelhead and salmon populations down below with much public access.
- The natural Escanaba River of the Upper Peninsula with great beauty in addition to great browns fishing.
- The Grand River with good populations of both trout and smallmouth bass with lots of thinly fished waters.
- The very popular rivers Huron, Muskegon, and Rogue.
Michigan has five primary trout: rainbow, brook, brown, cutthroat and lake trout. Brown trout are considered the most difficult to catch and brookies are the easiest.
