West Virginia fishing is very fine fishing. Trout are caught year round in West Virginia and there are several very good rivers. West Virginia has a very progressive and well run stocking program and it has delivered good trout fishery. West Virginia also has some very productive native trout streams too if that is your aim. Expect to catch rainbow, golden rainbow, brown, and brook trout. West Virginia is a year round trout fishery but odds can be much improved by observing the hatch conditions and the stocking program.

Smallmouth bass fishing is also very good in West Virginia. The New River is considered by many to be on the "very short list" of best east coast fishing rivers. The New River Gorge National River contains more than 50 miles of world-class smallmouth bass river fishing. The river is characterized by steep gorges, as high as 1000 feet, and much of it is only accessible by raft only. The Gorge is filled with large sandstone boulders providing excellent structure, deep pools, good currents, abundant food, and all the necessary ingredients needed for a great smallmouth bass fishery. From spring to fall, the New River is abundant with smallmouth bass, but also expect to catch large mouth bass, rock bass, catfish, crappie and bluegill. The New River is great fishing in beautiful mountain scenery with abundant wildlife and something to see around every turn. It is hard to beat that. The Gauley is in the same league as the world class New River. It is very inaccessible and can be intimidating. The Gauley should be left to the more prepared and experienced angler. In season you will catch smallmouth but also large mouth bass, rainbow, brown, and brook trout, musky and walleye. Gauley fishing will be great and the scenery unequaled.
