Fishing the North Carolina Coast
Jan/Feb/March: Fishing is slow except sea
bass and other bottom dwellers on warm days. Use light gear with bottom
rigs with squid or similar cut bait.
April: Season start. Look for bonito on
light spinning and fly combo with small spoons or jigging the bottom.
Gray trout and bluefish
are sparse but moving in.
May: Spanish will be picking up. With a
warm spring flounder and puppy
drum will have moved in.
June: One of the top months with a shot
at everything. Expect nice flounder and red drum inshore with live bait.
Spanish and kings will be off the beach.
July/August: Again, large flounder
and red drum inshore with spanish
and kings off shore. Expect plenty of fish and some real keepers.
September: Starting to be fall with very
good flounder, red
drum, and sea trout.
October: This is very often the best fishing
of the year. Expect plenty of large inshore flounder
inshore, drum, speckled and gray trout.
Although spanish have left or are leaving NC is a wonderland for albacore
and bonito.
November: Best month for inshore speckled
trout. Flounder will be leaving and
so will drum if cool fall.
December: Spotty, but very often productive
time for inshore fish.
Note that dates are meant to be
approximate. Please check with wildlife officials, etc. for exact date
for seasons and other regulated dates.
