With 6,000 lakes and ponds, coupled with 32,000 miles of streams and rivers winding through expansive forests that are a national treasure - Maine is a paradise. Whether you seek a native, wild salmon, trout or bass in a remote, wilderness environment, coastal stripers, or just want to go out for an afternoon of fun, Maine has it all!

[Maine] -- [Vermont] [New Hampshire] [Massachusetts]

Maine has 6,000 lakes and ponds. Clear and cold glacial lakes provide superb landlocked salmon fishing throughout the entire year plus many other fine sport fish. Sebago Lake which lies just 30 minutes northwest of the city of Portland is some of southern Maine's premier water. The Moosehead Lake region is prime for brook trout fishing after ice out. Nearly every lake and pond in the area will contain small- or large-mouth bass or trout.

Maine's coastline is a vast set of nooks and crannies yielding a vast saltwater fishery. There are very numerous miles of shoreline for the striped bass or striper fisherman and the is bountiful. Legendary striper surf casting locations include Mousam River, Saco River, Old Orchard Beach, Scarborough River Marsh, Spurwink River, Martin Point Bridge / Presumpscot River, Popham Beach, Morse River, Kennebec River, and Penobscot River. Maine's offshore fishery is good too but not developed like some of the neighbor states.

Maine also sports 32,000 miles of streams and rivers winding through expansive forests that are a national treasure. Many will provide superb rainbow and brook trout fishing, especially in the spring after water levels normalize. A short list of great rivers include:

  • Rapid River which many say is the best wild, big brook trout river in the United States.
  • Penobscot River, West Branch which is one of Maine’s premiere landlocked salmon fisheries.
  • Pleasant River is a high-quality trout stream not far from Portland.
  • Aroostook River know for brook trout.
  • Little Ossipee River the well stocked freestone river largely contained within the Vern Walker Wildlife Management Area.
  • Kennebago River which is a tough but productive trout and salmon river.

Plus many others.

Whether you seek a native, wild salmon, trout or bass in a remote, wilderness environment, or just want to go out for an afternoon of fun, Maine has it all!
